RUGBY SPOTLIGHT: Team Honored at Men's Basketball Game

Team Leaders and Coaches were honored in front of the student body for their 2010 EPRU Champship and other recent achievements including becoming the 3rd ranked team nationally for Men's DII rugby, a 2008 EPRU Championship, and a 2008 run in the national tournament.

Recap of 2010 Fall Season

 Hello SJU Rugby Fans,                       

     
                     Here if your wrap-up e-mail for the Fall semester. SJU RFC has had one of the best fall seasons in school history, winning the EPRU for the 2nd time in 3 years and ending with a ranking of #3 in the United States. Due to this success, SJU has also been invited to enter a 7s side in the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational in February. If SJU wins the 7s bracket in Las Vegas, they will earn the final berth in the Collegiate Rugby Championship which will be televised on NBC in June and take place at PPL Park, the stadium for MLS's Philadelphia Union. The link for each tournament is below. SJU RFC will also be recognized on Wednesday, December 8th at halftime of the SJU-Minnesota basketball game in Hagan Arena as our coaches, captains, and officers will be brought down onto the court at halftime.Also, be on the lookout for scheduled SJU Rugby Alumni Night invites to basketball games with receptions

Previous match: 11/14 Win 45-17 over Shippensburg University University (EPRU Final)              
-#3 SJU RFC finished at 6-2 (4-1 EPRU. They will host Georgetown University next March in the regional semifinal, as two wins in regionals puts SJU back in national championships. In addition to the awards below, a quick bit of recognition for Freshman Lock Brandon Dietz who has been invited to selection camp for the USA Under-20 National Team. Congratulations Brandon.

B-Side 
-SJU RFC B-side finished at 8-1 this year in a highly successful campaign that saw a number of athletes elevate themselves into the discussion for A-side time this coming Spring and beyond.

B-side Forward of the Year: Flanker Luch Perotti '13
 
Developmental Side 
-SJU Developmental Side finished the year at 3-4 but was able to make great strides. They look to make even more this coming Spring.

RUGBY SPOTLIGHT: Founder's and Hirsch Cups


Following SJU RFC's 55-0 season-ending victory over East Stroudsburg University, the first annual presentation of the Founder's and Hirsch Cups took place. Team Founder Mr. Hugh O'Neil '65 presented the Founder's Cup to the Backline MVP. This year's recipient is Fullback Matthew Borochaner '11. In addition, Rosemont College President Dr. Sharon Hirsh, wife of the late Neil Hirsh '65, and her son Michael Hirsh presented the Hirsh Cup to the Forwards MVP. This year's recipient is Lock/8-man Sean Blom '10. Also in attendance to present the cup was SJU Athletic Director Mr. Don Dijulia. The trophies will have the players' names engraved on them and will be kept in the SJU Athletics trophy case in the newly-renovated Hagan Arena.  Attached are photos of the presentation. 

In addition, the next SJU Rugby captains were announced. The captains for the 2010-2011 season will be Center Yianni O'Hara '11 and Flanker Chris Matarangas '12. We look forward to seeing their leadership skills continue to blossom as they lead SJU RFC on to more great things.
